Madeira weather warnings: what they mean for trails and SIMplifica bookings
Orange weather warning in Madeira? What IPMA's colours mean, when IFCN has closed the trails, and when your SIMplifica booking can be refunded or moved.
Last night the rain came in properly for the first time this autumn. IPMA put the south coast and the mountains under an orange warning for heavy rain from midnight to 9 am today, 1 November, with a yellow warning for the north coast and Porto Santo. If you're visiting Madeira between now and spring, you'll probably see at least one of these warnings, and it can change your hiking plans overnight. Here's what the colours mean, what has happened to the trails before, and what happens to the slot you booked and paid for.
Key facts
• Weather warnings in Portugal come from IPMA and run yellow, orange, red (IPMA).
• Trail closures are decided by IFCN and published on its official trails list. A warning is not a closure.
• IFCN closed all its classified trails during orange warnings on 3 March and 5 May 2026, as DN Madeira and JM Madeira reported.
• IFCN's FAQ says refunds or a new date are available only when IFCN restricts or closes the trail, for example for safety.
What the colours mean
Warnings come from IPMA, Portugal's national weather and sea institute (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera). They look up to three days ahead and cover things like strong wind, heavy rain, thunderstorms, fog, heat, cold and rough seas. In short, going by IPMA's guide:
- Yellow: some weather-dependent activities carry risk. Keep an eye on how conditions develop.
- Orange: moderate to high risk. Stay informed and follow advice from Civil Protection.
- Red: extreme risk.
A mountain path is exactly the kind of weather-dependent activity yellow is talking about. We grew up treating a yellow warning in the hills as a reason to pick a lower, shorter walk, or to go another day. That's our habit, not an official rule: we haven't found any source saying IFCN closes trails for a yellow warning.
What happens to the trails
The decision belongs to IFCN, the regional forest and nature agency (Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza), which manages most of Madeira's classified PR trails. Twice this year it has closed every classified trail it manages because of IPMA warnings:
- On 3 March 2026, during an orange warning driven mainly by wind. JM Madeira reported a 118 km/h gust at Chão do Areeiro, near Pico do Areeiro.
- On 5 May 2026, again for an orange warning, with the closure lasting as long as the warning was active.
In May, DN Madeira reported that the forest road between Eira do Serrado and Pico do Areeiro closed too. Many people use that road to reach the start of PR 1. The same report said ignoring a closure can bring a fine of up to €2,500 for an individual.
Both closures were announced the day before, so the evening is the time to check, not the car park in the morning. As we write this on 1 November, we haven't been able to confirm whether any trails were closed for this morning's orange warning, so check the list yourself.
Your SIMplifica booking: when you get your money back
Since 1 January 2026, IFCN's classified trails need a booked entry slot on SIMplifica, the regional government's online services portal, and visitors pay a fee (residents and children up to 12 don't). IFCN's own FAQ says rescheduling or a full refund is available only when IFCN restricts the trail, for example for safety, a closure or environmental risk. A new date depends on availability.
So a weather warning on its own doesn't get your money back. What matters is whether IFCN has closed or restricted your trail on your date.
The finer details below come from Madeira Journal's summary of a later version of the IFCN FAQ (June 2026). We couldn't open that version ourselves, so treat them as a guide and check with IFCN:
- Rain, a change of mind, the wrong date, illness, a cancelled flight or a missed bus don't qualify. The fee is lost.
- You ask within 10 working days of the booking date, by email to helpdesk.ifcn@madeira.gov.pt, with your tickets and invoice. For a new date, name the date and slot. For a refund, add a bank document with IBAN and SWIFT/BIC, plus the account holder's full name and address. Refunds are paid by bank transfer only.
- A new date stays on the same trail. Switching to a different PR is normally refused.
The earlier FAQ we could check lists IFCN's general contact as +351 291 145 590 and ifcn@madeira.gov.pt. Either way, keep your tickets and invoice until the walk is done.
After the storm
The regional Civil Protection service (Serviço Regional de Proteção Civil) warned on 31 October that this rain could bring down branches and trees, collapse retaining walls and slopes, and leave water across the roads. On a trail, that means rockfall, mud, and levada paths that stay slippery long after the sky clears.
After the May closure, DN Madeira reported that IFCN asked walkers to report rocks, branches or trees blocking paths once trails reopen. Portaria 595/2026, the new trail rules, also tells walkers to turn back the way they came if a landslide or obstacle blocks the path. Don't climb over a fresh slip to keep going.
How to plan around it
- Check IPMA the evening before, and look at the mountain area specifically, not just Funchal.
- Then check the IFCN trails list for your PR. That's where closures are published, and it's what decides refunds.
- Book with slack. If your holiday has a few days to play with, don't put the big ridge walk on your last day.
- Have a low-level plan B. On a yellow day, a short sheltered walk or a town day is often the better choice. Exposed ridges like PR 1 are where wind hits hardest.
- After heavy rain, give it time. Wear boots with real grip, go slower on wet levada edges, and turn back if a path is blocked.
- Respect the closure signs. They protect you, and the rescue teams who would have to come and get you.
Quick answers
Does a yellow warning close Madeira's trails? We found no source saying so. Closures are IFCN decisions, shown on its trails list.
Did IFCN close trails for orange warnings before? Yes. Press reports say all classified IFCN trails closed on 3 March and 5 May 2026.
Do I get a refund if it rains? No. IFCN's FAQ only offers a refund or new date when IFCN restricts or closes the trail.
Where do I check closures? On IFCN's official trails list, the evening before and again in the morning.
We love the mountains in winter: the waterfalls are full and the paths are quiet. They're just much better enjoyed the day after a warning than during one.
