PR1 Vereda do Areeiro: One-Way Rules & Logistics

The PR1 (Vereda do Areeiro) is Madeira's most spectacular and demanding hike, connecting the island's two highest peaks: Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo. Due to extreme popularity and safety concerns, important regulations are now in place.

The One-Way System

To prevent dangerous bottlenecks on narrow cliff-side paths, the authorities frequently implementone-way only regulations on PR1. This typically means you must start at Pico do Areeiro and hike towards Pico Ruivo, exiting at Achada do Teixeira (PR1.2).

Warning: Walking against the designated direction when a one-way rule is active is illegal and highly dangerous.

Logistics: How to get back to your car?

Because PR1 is often a point-to-point hike ending at Achada do Teixeira, logistics require planning:

  1. Transfer Services: Many local companies offer morning drop-offs at Areeiro and afternoon pick-ups at Achada do Teixeira.
  2. Taxis: You can take a taxi back from Achada do Teixeira to Pico do Areeiro, but it's expensive (approx. 45-60 minutes driving).
  3. Two Cars: If traveling in a group with two rental cars, park one at the end before starting.

Booking Required

Remember that PR1 requires an advance booking and fee payment via the SIMPLIFICA portal.
